Electrics & gas are the two areas of a home where the consequences of getting things wrong go well beyond a flooded kitchen or a dripping tap. Done badly, electrical and gas work kills people. Peter does not say that to frighten anyone — he says it because after twenty years in the trade he has seen enough to know that it is simply true.

That does not mean there is nothing useful here for a homeowner. There is plenty. Understanding how your home’s electrical and gas systems work, knowing what the warning signs of a problem look like and being clear on what you can safely do yourself are all genuinely valuable — and that is exactly what this section covers. Understanding Your Home’s Electrics

Most homeowners have a consumer unit — a fuse board — somewhere in their home and a reasonable idea of what it does in general terms. Beyond that things get hazy fairly quickly. Gas Work — There Are No Grey Areas

All gas work in the UK must be carried out by a Gas Safe registered engineer. Not a general builder. Not a plumber who used to do gas work. Not someone who learned on the job. A Gas Safe registered engineer — full stop. This is not a technicality or a box-ticking exercise. It is a legal requirement that exists because improperly installed gas appliances cause carbon monoxide poisoning, fires and explosions.

Peter does not hedge on this. If a job involves gas pipework, gas appliances, boiler installation, flue work or any other element of a gas system, the conversation ends with the same answer — get a Gas Safe registered engineer. Carbon Monoxide — What Every Homeowner Must Know

Carbon monoxide is produced by the incomplete combustion of gas, oil, wood and other fuels. It is colourless, odourless and at sufficient concentrations it is fatal. Every home with gas appliances should have at least one audible carbon monoxide alarm fitted in accordance with the manufacturer’s guidelines — ideally one on each floor where there is a gas appliance. Peter covers CO alarm placement, testing, what to do if an alarm sounds and the symptoms of carbon monoxide exposure that every homeowner and every member of their household should be able to recognise.
